Citing people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg and Axios report that global payment infrastructure giant Stripe has reached an agreement to acquire AI model aggregation and routing platform OpenRouter for more than $7 billion, with some sources putting the upper end of the deal value at $8 billion in a cash-and-stock transaction. Full deal terms have not been officially disclosed. When contacted by media outlets, Stripe stated it would not comment on market rumors and speculation.
Founded in 2023 by Alex Atallah, co-founder of NFT marketplace OpenSea, OpenRouter positions itself as a unified API gateway for the AI industry. Developers can access over 400 domestic and international large language models via a single integration, including closed and open-weight offerings from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, DeepSeek, Kimi and MiniMax. The platform delivers intelligent routing, failover switching, token usage metering and consolidated billing capabilities. It does not train foundation models or operate proprietary compute infrastructure, and generates revenue through platform commissions of approximately 5–5.5%.
The company’s valuation has seen an extraordinarily sharp jump. In May 2026, OpenRouter closed a $113 million Series B financing round led by Alphabet’s CapitalG with participation from NVIDIA and Snowflake, at a post-money valuation of $1.3 billion. Only 82 days after the Series B close, the proposed acquisition values the firm at more than five times that figure. The platform currently serves roughly 8 million developer users and handles 25 trillion tokens in weekly throughput, with projections to reach quadrillion-scale token processing by year-end. Open-source large models originating from China account for a meaningful share of traffic on the platform.
Market analysts note that OpenRouter was already a major Stripe customer, relying on Stripe for payments, invoicing, tax workflows and risk management. The core strategic rationale behind the acquisition is to combine AI model orchestration and routing with AI usage metering and global payment settlement. Stripe previously acquired usage metering startup Metronome; adding OpenRouter completes its buildout of AI commercialization infrastructure spanning routing, consumption tracking and payment settlement. The combined stack targets the emerging industry trend of autonomous AI agents invoking models and executing transactions, positioning Stripe to capture critical data and settlement access points for AI inference consumption.
The deal has also raised industry concerns over neutrality. A core selling point for OpenRouter has been its stance as an impartial third party with no bias toward any model provider. Following integration into Stripe, market participants are watching whether commercial incentives could skew routing priorities, potentially prompting developers and model vendors to reassess dependency risks.
Closing remains subject to regulatory review. OpenRouter’s public APIs are expected to operate unchanged in the near term, while billing and settlement modules will be deeply integrated into Stripe’s product suite over the long run.
